あっという間に2018年…、明けましておめでとうございます。今年もグングンやっていこうと思いますので、どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

さて、gallomoのマブダチ、台北ベースのフォトグラファーAsh（アシュ）がピックアップしたアーティストへインタビューするというシリーズ、in air on air始めちゃいます。
記念すべき第1弾はgallomo大のお気に入りの新進気鋭のDJ、Mars89君へインタビュー。
※ちなみに本日1月10日、Do Hits/SCV ClothingのVeeekyをゲストに迎えMars89君、radar radioの番組に登場予定なり。

私が初めてMars89（以下マーズ）に出会ったのは、2017年9月の台北だった。私のルームメイトのマリが、DJをしている友達が東京から台北に来てるんだけど、アシュと彼は音楽の趣味が合うから仲良くなると思う、と言ったのが始まりだった。カッコいい友人を作るのにTOO LATEということはない、という訳で、マーズが台北の私達の家に遊びにきて、くだらない生放送のイベント（※1）を皆でテレビで観てチルした後に、ゴッテゴテでコッテコテの内観の火鍋レストランに向かった。驚いたことに、本場の薬膳スープやアヒルの血、豚の血の塊にマーズは全く臆しなかった。その代わり、マーズは私達にへんてこな台湾料理や中華料理に関する質問を間髪入れずに聞いてきた。奇想天外な宇宙人のような人、というのがマーズに対する私の最初の印象だった。ポカリ代わりにガソリンを飲む人、というような。

彼が台北に来て2日目。台北で人気のレコードショップ"Waiting Room"にてマーズがネットラジオに出演することになっていたので、皆で向かった。むせぶようなベースが折り重なったバラエティーに富んだマーズの1時間のセットにとても感銘を受けたし、偶然にもDJデッキの上に摩訶不思議宇宙人、ETのぬいぐるみが飾られていた（※2）。次の日の朝、朝ご飯を皆で一緒に食べて音楽や今までの人生経験について語ったり、カルチャーエクスチェンジ的な話をして過ごした。マーズは午後には東京に帰ってしまうので、家でダラダラ話していても時間の無駄になってしまうから代わりに観光でも連れて行くよと伝えたけど、いや、全然大丈夫、とマーズは返答。彼の台北での最終日は、空港まで向かう時間まで、家の隣で行われていた工事現場の騒音と共に5時間に渡る興味深いトークで幕を閉じた。

その後も、有意義で礼儀正しく、そしてちょっと距離感のある彼とのやり取りは続き、ある日、あぁ、彼は私と同じでとても馬鹿げたことをいつも考えているんだ！という結論に辿り着いた。そして、すごくオープンな状態になったと思う。この記事のイントロダクションはちょっとかしこまっているけど、下記のインタビューは突拍子もないものになったのは、これが私達のリアルな会話であって、私の知る唯一無二のMars89は、ウィットに富んでいて、子供のようで（好奇心旺盛という部分）、正直で控えめで賢く、これらのキャラクターは彼を素晴らしいアーティストとして形成し、且つ内面をユニークに仕立てていると思う。

これから数ヶ月、私達は色々コラボする予定なのでその打ち合せついでに、そして、マーズの本当の姿をキャプチャーするため、渋谷のメインロードや裏道や屋上、住宅街をブラブラ歩きながらナンセンスな質問を彼に投げかけてみた。道中、google mapは禁止にして、直感に頼って道を進もうと決めた。結果は私が思ったより上出来だった。スマホから目を離さない人達、休憩中の人達、kindlesを読んでいる人達に加え、クリスマスソングとクリスマスオーナメントに囲まれたありきたりなコーヒーチェーン店の中でマーズへインタビューをした。私達のバカげた会話はこのごく普通な生活感溢れる空間に少しだけ面白みを与えたような気がした。

- Mars89の音楽やミックスは、アンビエントサンプルにヘビーなベースがダブされたようなものが多い感じがするけど、この感じは自分のリアルな経験、または想像から作られたものなの？

どっちもだと思う。現実と想像の間に境界線はない感じ。

- 自分の曲用に、PVを作る予定はある？もし作る場合、どんなビジュアルの要素をトライしたい？

今のところ制作する予定はないけど、是非作りたいですね。僕の音楽はいつもSci-Fi、ホラー、それとカルト映画にインスパイアされているから、VHSテクスチャーで変な映像を作りたい。

- 幼い頃から今までずっと夢見てる職業をリストアップして。

宇宙飛行士。

- 個人作品かコラボレーションか、どっちがいい？

基本、個人的な作品作りが好きだけど、コラボレーションもトライしたい。

- 次のステップは何？

いくつかトラックとレコードをリリースして、願わくば中国と香港に行きたい。いつも展示や映画やその他のアート作品のために音楽を作りたいと思ってて、将来的な僕個人のプロジェクトは何かインスタレーションに関することかなと考えてる。僕にとって音楽やDJはインスタレーションの一部みたいな感じ。

- 完全に同意！音楽はフィジカルで見えるものではないから記憶するのが比較的難しいものだと思う。もし何か物体的なものを加えれるとしたら、オーディエンスも理解しやすいものになると思う。さて、次のステップとうのをもっと手短にして、実際に次にやることは何？

コーヒーを飲むこと。

- エキゾチックなスパイスが入った食べ物が好きみたいだけど、もし今までに経験したことのないような香辛料が入ってる食べ物を食べたとしたら、日本の漫画みたいに、何か曲や効果音が脳内で流れたりする？

アシュは漫画の読み過ぎじゃない？笑　でも、香辛料といえば、辛い食べ物が大好きで、前回ヨーロッパに行った時は中東のサンドイッチやケバブショップを探すというのが旅の目的の一つになってたかな。

- じゃあ、本当にそういうものを食べてる時に異国チックな効果音や映像は思い浮かばない？

効果音はなしで、多分砂漠に羊がいるのが思い浮かぶかな。でも、砂漠に羊ってアリなのかな。

- クリスチャン一家で育ったんだよね？教会にはもう行かないとしても、ゴスペルやキリスト教の教えに影響を受けたと思う？ゴスペルは沢山のジャンルの音楽と関連性があると知っていると思うけど。

ゴスペルのイメージは、ウーピーゴールドバーグの天使にラブソングをって感じかな。14歳の時、両親が弟と生活態度的なことでしょっちゅう喧嘩してて。僕も同じく良い子ではなかったけど、両親に反抗する代わりにキリスト教に反抗してた。その頃ちょうど哲学に興味を持ち始めてて、ある日、ニーチェの本を読んでいたら、"Gott ist tot"っていうフレーズが目について。そしたらその意味は、神は死んだ、っていうことだった。

- もしアジア圏のミュージシャンで一ヶ月同じ町で過ごせるとしたら誰を選ぶ？そして、彼女/彼と何をしたい？例えば、ミサイルを開発するとか、料理を作り合うとか、ファイトクラブを始めるとか…。誰でも良いし、やりたいことは何でもいいから！

Howie Lee(Do Hitsレーベルオーナー/ミュージシャン、以下ハウィー)の話は色々聞いてて、とても面白い人だと思うから、1ヶ月間ハウィーと台北で過ごしたいと思うけど、難しいかな。可能であれば何か音楽とかけ離れた事をしてみたい。すごく良い経験になると思う。例えば、何かビジュアル作品を一緒に作るとか、音楽に関してただただ話すとか。で、アシュが音楽作ればいいんじゃないかな。

- OK, じゃぁ私が音楽を作って、２人でビジュアルを作ってください。シフトチェンジ、という感じで。

その他にも台北には沢山いいミュージシャンがいるよね、Tzu Sing、Sonia Calico、John Du(Forest)、Meuko Meukoとか。また台北に行けたら皆に会ってみたい。

台北出身のAsh（アシュ）。4年間イギリスに住んでいた間、アンダーグラウンドカルチャーに慣れ親しみ、台湾に帰国した後も常に小さくとも活気溢れるサブカルシーンを追っている。最近は、北京を拠点としたのレーベル Do Hitsの写真撮影やビジュアル素材制作をしたり、SCV Clothingのコアメンバーでもある。Ashの3番の顔といえば、エレクトロミュージックシーンのちょっとしたインサイダー、写真家、パーティー好き。音楽経験や音楽関係の友人達から聞く話に掻き立てられ、自身の見聞を視覚的にアーカイブしてしまいがちのようである。

....New interview series "in air on air" by gallomo's bestie Ash from Taipei, freshly starting out with Mars89

It was this September in Taipei when I first met Mars89. My flatmate Mari told me that her DJ friend from Tokyo just arrived and we might be good friends since we have similar tastes in music. It’s never too late to make some cool friends, isn’t it? Mars89 showed up in my flat, chilled for an hour to watch an extremely stupid live streaming event with us, and then headed over to a crazy spicy hotpot restaurant together. Surprisingly, Chinese herbal spicy soup base, duck blood, and pig blood cake didn’t scare this Japanese at all. Instead, he quite enjoyed them and kept on asking quirky questions about Taiwanese/Chinese food culture. This is pretty much of my first impression to him: An unpredictably alien-like guy. He drinks gasoline as Pocari Sweat at some point?

On his second stay, we went to Waiting Room, a leading record shop in Taipei, as Mars89 was scheduled to be the guest DJ for the radio show. I was fully amazed by his versatile one-hour set with layers of massively choking bass. Coincidently, it happened to be an ET stuffed toy placed on the DJ deck. Early in the next morning, we had breakfast together and then stayed at home talking about music, life experiences, and cultural exchange. He’s actually leaving back to Tokyo in the afternoon so I told him that I can show him around since sitting here might be a waste of his last few hours. ”No, not at all.” he replied. His last day of Taipei trip ended up with 5-hr non-stop profound talk in one space along with the noises from the construction work next door.

This profound, polite and a bit distant talk went on quite often til one day I found Mars89’s brain always pictures something stupid, LIKE ME. BOOM, It’s officially unlocked. That’s the reason why this introduction of reportage is a bit proper and formal but the interview below seems coming out of nowhere. However this is the our pattern and this is “the” Mars89 I’ve found: witty, childlike (especially the “ full of curiosity ” part), honest, humble and clever. These characteristics undoubtedly shape him an outstanding artist and unique person inwards.

We have some more collabs coming up in next few months so that we took a long night walk wandering around and throwing nonsense questions on the main roads in Shibuya, dark alleys, famous rooftop, and cul-de-sacs just for capturing the real him. The game rule was strictly no Google Map allowed, just follow the intuition. The consequence turned out far better than I expected. The interview was done in a normal franchise cafe whilst other customers were phubbing, resting, and reading on kindles surrounding with holiday songs and Christmassy ornaments. Our loony conversation slightly spiced up the moment of this ordinary 生活感. 

- Your music and mixes seem full of ambient samplings dubbed with heavy bass. Do these come from your real experiences or imagination?

I think both. there is no boundary between reality and imagination for me.

- Any plan to do some music videos for your own music any sooner? If so, what kinds of visual elements you'd love to try out?

No I don’t have any now but I want to. Due to my music is always inspired by Sci-fi, horror, andcult movies, I want to make weird video with VHS texture.

- List your dream jobs chronically from childhood to present.

- Individual work or collaboration. Which one do you prefer?

Always individual but I want to try some collaborations.

- What’s your next move?

I’ll release some tracks and vinyl and hopefully travel to China and Hong Kong. I always want to make music for exhibitions, movies, or any art forms. My future personal project should be something related to installation. For me, music and DJs are sort of like installation to some extends. 

- Agree. Music is relevantly difficult to be remembered since it’s not physical yet visible. If you can present an object as an add-on, it’d be more comprehensive for audience. Let’s shorten the length of your “move”. What’s your next NOT-SO-SERIOUS move?

Drink coffee. 

- You like food with loads of exotic spices. What if u eat some food with the spices you’ve never tried before. Is there any song or sound popping out in ur brain just like Japanese manga or CF? 

You read too much comics. However, talking about spices, Since I’m really into spicy food, searching for middle eastern sandwiches or kebab shops was on my to-do list during my last trip to Europe.

- No exotic tunes or visual popped out whiel having these?

No sound. Maybe the vision of lamb in desert. But lamb in desert??? Is it reasonable??

- You are raised in a Christian family. Even thought you don’t go to church anymore, any gospel song or Christian spirit still influences you? Since we both know that gospel music is much related to many music genres.

The image of Gospel music to me is Whoopi Goldberg in Sister Act. When i was 14, my younger brother often argued with my parents about life. I wasn’t a well-behaved kid either, constantly debating with my parents about Christianity. At that time I just started exploring the world of philosophy. One day I accidentally read about Nietzsche, the phrase “Gott ist tot.” showed up in front of me. And it means “God is dead.”

- Choose one asian musician that you’d love to spend 1 month with staying in the same city. What do you plan to do with him/her, like invent a missile, cooking b2b, start a fight club, ANYONE ANYTHING.

I’ve heard many stories of Howie Lee from you so I guess he’s funny! I’d choose to spend one month with Howie Lee in Taipei but it can be difficult I assume. I wan do something apart from music with him if it’s possible. Should be a good experience. For example, do some visual works together, not just talk about music. Maybe you should make music.

- Okay. I make music and you guys do the visual. Let’s swap the positions.

Besides, there are many good musicians in Taipei, like Tzusing, Sonia Calico, John Du, and Meuko Meuko. I’d love to pay the second visit to Taipei to hang out with them.

This is Ash from Taiwan. Greatly influenced from rave and underground culture during my 4-year stay in London, my relocation back to Taipei never means to exclude myself from this tiny yet vibrant scene. Currently I do photography and visual materials for Beijing-based music label Do Hits and also a core member of SCV Clothing. As a person holding triple identities: partly insider in electronic music scene,  photo taker, and party goer,  my audio experience and musical friends’ stories drive me to visually archive what I’ve been told and listened.
